Will Crotons Return After A Freeze?

Q. I covered my crotons during a freeze but the leaves still fell off. Will the plant survive?
                                                                                                              Daytona,FL.

A.
The trunks are a bit hardier and may have made it through. I would wait and watch for a
week or so. If the entire plants turn brown or black they are most likely lost and should
be removed. Some sections may stay healthy, normal color. These are undamaged and
will resprout. After a week or two, prune the plants back to the healthy sections, removing
freeze damaged plant sections. When the weather warms up they should resprout new
shoots.

          Joseph`s Coat Houseplant?

Q. I`m looking for a houseplant known as Joseph`s Coat. Can you help me locate one?
                                                                                                       New York,NY.

A.
There are several plants known by this name, but I suspect you may be looking for
either a Codiaeum (this plant may also be called croton) or possibly Alternanthera
ficoidea which is somtimes called Telanthera. Selections of both of are available from
your Tropical nursery or maybe a large home improvement store in your area that sells
plants.

           Growing Codiaeums Outdoors?

Q. Can codiaeums be grown successfully outside in this region?
                                                                    San Gabriel,CA.

A.
Codiaeum (Croton) can be grown outdoors as an annual or indoors as a houseplant.
They perform best as greenhouse plants because of their need for humidity and ample
water. If you choose to grow them in containers outdoors during the spring and summer
months, then take them back outdoors the following spring.
